LIVER - Cavernous haemangioma

Description
The specimen consists of the left lobe of liver sectioned in the horizontal plane. Situated at the periphery of the lobe is a large semispherical tumour mass measuring approximately 16 cm in maximum extent. The tumour is encapsulated and on sectioning consists of multiple cystic spaces with extensive intervening areas of haemorrhage. Microscopic examination of this tumour showed it to be a cavernous haemangioma.
History
This 35-year-old male presented to his general practitioner complaining of a gastric swelling. Ultrasonic investigation showed this to be a mass arising in the liver and occupying the majority of the left lobe. Hemihepatectomy was undertaken and the patient remains well four years after diagnosis.
